Sustainability — Our Environmental & Community Commitments

At Coconut Shisha Charcoal, sustainability is not an afterthought; it is the core of our business model. Our company was founded on the principle of valorization—creating high-value products from agricultural resources that would otherwise be considered waste. This commitment extends from the environment to the communities we work with, ensuring our growth is both responsible and inclusive. Our sustainability initiatives are managed by a dedicated member of our team to ensure they are integral to our operations.

Environmental Commitments

1. Circular Economy & Waste Valorization

Our entire business is built on a circular economy model. We take coconut shells, a byproduct of the copra and coconut milk industries, and transform them into a premium energy source. This prevents the shells from being burned in open fields, which releases uncontrolled emissions, or from ending up in landfills.

2. Sustainable Sourcing

We source our coconut shells exclusively from smallholder farming cooperatives in regions like North Sulawesi, Central Java, and Riau. We do not engage in or support deforestation for the purpose of planting new coconut trees. Our supply chain relies on the existing, mature, and highly productive coconut agriculture that is a cornerstone of Indonesia’s economy.

3. Low-Emission Carbonization

We are continuously investing in cleaner production technology. Our facilities are moving from traditional drum kilns to more advanced pyrolysis reactors. These systems capture and treat emissions, and in some cases, recycle the wood vinegar (pyroligneous acid) produced during carbonization for use as a natural biopesticide, further contributing to a circular model.

4. Eco-Friendly Binders

All our shisha charcoal briquettes are bound with 100% natural, food-grade binders, primarily tapioca starch sourced from local cassava farmers. We use no chemical additives, fillers, or accelerants, ensuring a clean and pure final product that is safe for consumers and the environment.

Community Impact & Social Responsibility

1. Local Employment & Economic Empowerment

Our production facilities are intentionally located in rural areas, providing stable, formal-sector employment in communities where such opportunities are scarce. We provide fair wages, comprehensive safety training, and health insurance (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan) to all our employees. Over 95% of our factory workforce is hired from the local villages surrounding our facilities.

2. Fair-Price Guarantees for Farmers

We establish long-term contracts with our partner farming cooperatives. We guarantee a fair, above-market price for their coconut shells, providing a vital secondary income stream that supplements their earnings from coconut meat and milk. This direct partnership eliminates middlemen and ensures more profit remains within the farming community.

3. Community Development Projects

A portion of our annual profits is reinvested into the communities where we operate. Our current projects include:

  • Educational Support: Providing school supplies and scholarships for the children of our partner farmers in a village near our Central Java facility.
  • Infrastructure Improvement: Contributing to the improvement of local roads leading to our sourcing areas, which benefits the entire community.
  • Skills Training: Offering technical training programs on sustainable agricultural practices to our cooperative partners.

Our vision is to build a business that is not only profitable but also a powerful force for positive environmental and social change in Indonesia. When you partner with Coconut Shisha Charcoal, you are investing in a supply chain that is ethical, sustainable, and empowering.
